Carlos Bittar was born in Asunción, Paraguay in 1961. In High School, he discovered with Paul Griffin, his Photography teacher in the American School, that taking pictures was a fascinating activity. In 1979 he took most of the yearbook’s pictures. During his Architecture College years, Bittar kept on experimenting with the camera. In 1988 he made his first individual exhibition: Fragmentos Urbanos in the Paraguayan – American Cultural Center (CCPA), on initiative of the photographer Jesús Ruiz Nestosa. Since then he hasn’t stopped exhibiting his pictures, in Paraguay and abroad. The international exhibitions were he exhibited his work were: El Tren a Vapor in the Teatro Municipal San Martín photogallery in Buenos Aires(1992), Fotografía paraguaya in Dachau, Germany (1998),the Second Biennial of International Photography in Curitiba, Brasil (1998) and the Third month of Latin American Photography de fotografía latinoamericana, in the Centro Cultural Pasaje Dardo Rocha in La Plata, Argentina (2000). His last exhibitions in the country were: Humidus in la Plazita(2003) and XKSA in ICPA Goethe Zentrum (2005). In 1993 and 1994, Bittar took Documentary Photography and Photojournalism studies in the International Center of Photography (New York). When he came back, he worked as a journalistic photographer for many years in several media, such as ABC color newspaper and TeVeo Magazine. In 2001 he obtained the third prize in the Patronage for Visual Arts Jacinto Rivero Contest, award that allowed him to publish Fin de Zona Urbana, book of urban pictures of Paraguay from the end and the beginning of the century. The next year, 2002, after years of work, he published Última Estación, book that documents the steam train in Paraguay during what later would be its last years of operation: from 1989 to 1991. At the moment, Bittar works free-lance in his studio fotoestudio792 and he keeps on preparing photoessays for a next publication. |
